Automating the contract lifecycle with AI and document intelligence
A contract intelligence platform set out to automate the legal contract lifecycle, from extracting information from scanned documents to generating new contracts from natural-language input. We engineered AI, OCR, and NLP capabilities that enabled accurate clause classification, automated contract generation, and scalable processing across millions of legal documents.
About the client
A contract intelligence company developing a digital platform to automate legal contract workflows for legal professionals and organizations.
The platform needed to handle the complete document lifecycle, including extracting information from scanned contracts, understanding and classifying contractual clauses, and generating new contracts based on natural-language requirements.
The scale of the platform added another layer of complexity. It needed to process millions of legal documents through cloud-native infrastructure while maintaining the accuracy and throughput expected in professional legal workflows.
The business challenge
Legal contracts are often stored in different formats, including scanned documents and unstructured PDFs. Extracting useful information from these documents requires reliable preprocessing and document intelligence capabilities.
Beyond extraction, the platform needed to understand the contents of contracts at the clause level. More than 600 clause types needed to be classified with high precision and recall. The system also needed to move in the other direction—from understanding legal requirements expressed in natural language to generating complete contracts.
All of this needed to operate reliably at SaaS scale across large volumes of legal documents.
Key Challenges
- Extracting reliable information from scanned and unstructured contract documents.
- Processing scanned PDFs through OCR before downstream analysis.
- Classifying more than 600 different types of contractual clauses.
- Achieving high precision and recall across diverse legal clause categories.
- Converting natural-language requirements into complete contracts.
- Supporting document generation within an integrated legal workflow.
- Processing millions of contracts through a scalable, multi-tenant SaaS environment.
- Maintaining high throughput while controlling cloud infrastructure costs.
How we solved it
We developed an AI-driven contract intelligence platform combining OCR, NLP, clause classification, document generation, and scalable SaaS infrastructure.
The document processing pipeline was designed to handle both structured and unstructured contract PDFs. OCR capabilities enabled scanned contracts to be converted into machine-readable information, creating the foundation for subsequent analysis.
We then developed a clause classification engine trained across a library of more than 600 clause types. The resulting models achieved 90%+ accuracy across categories, enabling the platform to identify and categorize contractual provisions at scale.
For contract creation, we developed natural-language-driven generation capabilities that allowed users to describe their requirements and generate contracts within the platform. An integrated DOCX/Google Docs editor provided a practical environment for reviewing and working with generated documents.
The platform was built as a scalable, multi-tenant SaaS system capable of processing large volumes of legal documents while optimizing cloud infrastructure costs.
